As a Health Extension Officer within the Business Line, you will play a vital role in delivering essential health services and promoting wellness across communities in the Papua New Guinea region. This position offers the opportunity to actively contribute to improving public health outcomes by working closely with local populations, health facilities, and stakeholders to implement effective health interventions.
About the Role
The Health Extension Officer is responsible for implementing health programs at the community level, focusing on preventive and promotive health care. By collaborating with community members and health professionals, you will help increase access to essential health services and health education. This role requires a highly motivated and compassionate individual capable of working both independently and as part of multidisciplinary teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct community visits to assess health status and provide health education that promotes disease prevention and a healthy lifestyle.
- Support the delivery of immunization programs, maternal and child health services, and nutrition interventions.
- Identify and report on health trends and outbreaks within the community to appropriate health authorities and support rapid response efforts.
- Collaborate with local health facilities and organizations to ensure seamless service delivery and resource utilization.
- Facilitate training and capacity-building sessions for community volunteers and other health workers.
- Utilize data collection tools to monitor the progress and impact of health programs and contribute to regular reporting requirements.
- Promote inclusive health services that respect cultural diversity and are accessible to all community members.
Who We're Looking For
Ideal candidates will have a background in public health, nursing, or a related health discipline, with experience working in community health settings. Strong communication skills and cultural sensitivity are essential, alongside the ability to build trusting relationships with diverse populations. The ability to work in a challenging environment with limited resources while maintaining a positive and proactive attitude is highly valued.
Qualifications & Skills
- Diploma or degree in Public Health, , or Rural Health
- Experience in community health outreach or extension services is preferred.
- Sound knowledge of primary health care principles and practices.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to communicate health information effectively to diverse audiences.
- Proficiency in basic data collection and reporting.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Demonstrated commitment to ethical standards and confidentiality in healthcare.
Working Environment
This position is based in Papua New Guinea with fieldwork in surrounding communities. Expect a mix of office and outdoor work environments, often requiring travel to remote or rural locations. The role involves engaging directly with community members, health workers, and external partners to implement health initiatives effectively.
