The Project

The project is one of the largest outsourced medical facilities in support of the Department of Defense located on Kwajalein and Roi-Namur. Intl SOS is the medical subcontractor under DynCorp International. The scenic chains of Islands are a strategic defense location equidistant from Hawaii, Australia and the Philippines. On Kwajalein, Intl SOS operates a 13 bed, Critical Access Hospital plus a dental clinic, a veterinary clinic, and is responsible for food service safety. Kwajalein is a 6.5 square mile Island where bikes are the primary mode of transportation. Residents enjoy premier scuba diving including access to historical wreckage from WWII, fishing, and quiet beaches. While there is no cell service, data apps work well when using Wi-Fi. Kwajalein is a close knit community of 1500 military personnel, army civilians, contractors and family members.


The Surgeon is responsible for preoperative diagnosis, performing operations, and providing the patient with postsurgical care and treatment.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Reviews patient records and makes diagnoses to determine if there is a need for surgery as a preventative or corrective measure.
  • Assesses and provides patient with risk factors involved with going through or not going through with surgery.
  • Performs surgical procedures to prevent or correct injury, diseases, deformities, patient function, and or quality of life following all regulatory and ethical protocols.
  • Examines all instruments, equipment and the operating room to ensure sterility.
  • Directs and coordinates activities of hospital staff including nurses, assistants, and specialist for proper patient care.
  • Coordinate with CMO for treatment capabilities pre and post-surgery and identify potential risks 
  • May be required to assist in stabilization of patient and coordination of evacuation of patient to medevac center or CONUS.
Experience Required:
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience as a general surgeon.
  • Preferably in a remote site.
  • Preferred completion of fellowship in Trauma, Critical Care or General Surgery.
Education Required:
  • Current and unrestricted license or authorizing document from any US State, District of Columbia or US Territory to provide healthcare within scope of practice.
  • Completion of a General Surgery Residency within the United State or Western country equivalent.
  • U.S. Board Certified or recently American Board of Surgery (ABS) qualified General Surgeon
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • American College of Surgeons - Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certification is preferred.
  • DEA License.
Other Special Qualifications:
  • On call requirements as part of a rotation
  • Must be able to read, write and speak English to effectively communicate
  • This position is unaccompanied.
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident Card is required. 
  • US DOD CNACI clearance or the ability to obtain one is required.
  • Must be able to relocate to the United States Army Kwajalein Atoll.
  • A valid passport is required and must be in your possession prior to relocation. You must maintain a current passport during your stay on Kwajalein Atoll.
