The Project

The project site is the U.S. Army Garrison Hospital, located on the atolls of Kwajalein and Roi-Namur in the Republic of the Marshall Islands, a scenic chain of Islands equidistant from Hawaii, Australia, and the Philippines. It is one of the largest outsourced medical facilities in support of the Department of Defense. Since 2018 International SOS Government Medical Services, has been subcontracted to manage the 10-bed Critical Access Kwajalein Hospital, dental clinic, veterinary clinic, and a medical clinic on Roi-Namur. Kwajalein is a 6.5 square mile atoll where bikes are the primary mode of transportation. The more than 1,500 residents include military personnel, Army Civilians, contractors, and their family members. Kwajalein is home to one of the world’s largest coral atolls and lagoons. The year-round warm and sunny weather supports a variety of activities, such as scuba diving, sport fishing, sailing, and wind surfing. The military base also boasts a movie theater, bowling alley, gym, golf course, ceramics studio, and small shopping areas.

Description

The Surgeon is responsible for preoperative diagnosis, performing operations, and providing the patient with postsurgical care and treatment.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

· Reviews patient records and makes diagnoses to determine if there is a need for surgery as a preventative or corrective measure.

· Assesses and provides patient with risk factors involved with going through or not going through with surgery.

· Performs surgical procedures to prevent or correct injury, diseases, deformities, patient function, and or quality of life following all regulatory and ethical protocols.

· Examines all instruments, equipment and the operating room to ensure sterility.

· Directs and coordinates activities of hospital staff including nurses, assistants, and specialist for proper patient care.

· Coordinate with CMO for treatment capabilities pre and post-surgery and identify potential risks

· May be required to assist in stabilization of patient and coordination of evacuation of patient to medevac center or CONUS.

 

Experience Required

· Minimum five (5) years of experience as a general surgeon.

· Preferably in a remote site.

· Preferred completion of fellowship in Trauma, Critical Care or General Surgery.

      

Education Required

· Current and unrestricted license or authorizing document from any US State, District of Columbia or US Territory to provide healthcare within scope of practice.

· Completion of a General Surgery Residency within the United State or Western country equivalent.

· U.S. Board Certified or recently American Board of Surgery (ABS) qualified General Surgeon

· Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.

· American College of Surgeons - Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certification is preferred.

· DEA License

Other Special Qualifications

• On call requirements as part of a rotation

• Must be able to read, write and speak English to effectively communicate

• This position is unaccompanied.

• US Citizen or Permanent Resident Card is required.

• US DOD NACI clearance or the ability to obtain one is required.

• Must be able to relocate to the United States Army Kwajalein Atoll.

• A valid passport is required and must be in your possession prior to relocation. You must maintain a current passport during your stay on Kwajalein Atoll.
