The Kwajalein Project:
The project site is the U.S. Army Garrison Hospital, located on the atolls of Kwajalein and Roi-Namur in the Republic of the Marshall Islands, a scenic chain of Islands equidistant from Hawaii, Australia, and the Philippines. It is one of the largest outsourced medical facilities in support of the Department of Defense. Since 2018 International SOS Government Medical Services, has been subcontracted to manage the 10-bed Critical Access Kwajalein Hospital, dental clinic, veterinary clinic, and a medical clinic on Roi-Namur. Kwajalein is a 6.5 square mile atoll where bikes are the primary mode of transportation. The more than 1,500 residents include military personnel, Army Civilians, contractors, and their family members. Kwajalein is home to one of the world’s largest coral atolls and lagoons. The year-round warm and sunny weather supports a variety of activities, such as scuba diving, sport fishing, sailing, and wind surfing. The military base also boasts a movie theater, bowling alley, gym, golf course, ceramics studio, and small shopping areas.
The Role:
The OR registered nurse will assume responsibility for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating direct and indirect pre, intra and postsurgical care to patients. She/ he will competently function as a member of the interdisciplinary team to provide patient centered nursing care. She/he serves as an advocate for the patient and their family, and intercedes on their behalf by acting as a liaison for patients and their families with respect to their rights and beliefs. The Operating Room Registered Nurse will be responsible for assisting with preoperative and postsurgical care and treatment under the supervision of the Chief Medical Officer and surgeon. She/he will utilize their expertise of evidenced based nursing practice to manage unexpected and emergent situations, to mitigate and assist in the surgical intervention of a variety of injuries and illnesses in a prompt and professional manner.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist medical providers with medical and surgical procedures and treatments as allowed within licensed scope of work.
• Coordinate pre and postoperative education.
• Review the pre-surgical patient’s vital signs, chief complaint, medical history, and prescribed medications.
• Establish observable and documentable patient goals using nursing care plans within NANDA guidelines
• Ensure patient safety using pre-surgical guidelines and procedures
• Monitor the patient’s emotional and physical wellbeing throughout the surgical continuum.
• Report all changes in patient’s conditions to the medical provider.
• Collaborate and provide assistance with minor/acute surgical procedures and have the capabilities to stabilize trauma patients in preparation for transport the nearest center of medical excellence for a higher level of care.
• Assembles the type and quantity of material and special equipment needed for daily procedures and possible emergencies.
• Circulates and scrubs for surgical procedures.
• Maintains open communication lines, both intra-departmentally and interdepartmentally, to provide for total needs of the patient.
• Responds to surgical emergency requirements such as cardiac, pulmonary, or respiratory failure and hemorrhage.
• Discusses operative procedures with patients and informs them of what to expect during surgery.
• Consults with the operating surgeon and establishes priorities of care for each patient entering the operating suite.
• Participates in preparing, sterilizing, and caring for operating room equipment and supplies. Must accurately set up and operate specialized medical equipment with no more than two errors per quarter.
• Adheres to central sterile supply service activities.
• coordinates an ongoing, in-service education program to continuously update knowledge and skills of all assigned operating room nursing personnel.
• Provides perioperative nursing care, for all types of patients admitted to the surgical suite for surgical intervention. Includes elective, urgent and emergency procedures on patients of all ages.
• Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates nursing care for all patients including newborns, children, adolescents, adults and the elderly; disabled to include visually and hearing impaired; and individuals of varying ethnic and religious backgrounds to include those who do not speak or understand English.
• Participation and compliance with quality and process improvement activities and events to ensure compliance with national standards and guidelines.
• Displays knowledge of the administrative requirements for proper documentation of patient’s condition including disease progress, acknowledgement of teaching, and follow up care.

Job Profile:
Experience Required:
- Minimum of 5 years of nursing experience
- Experience in a clinical setting within an Operating Room
- Experience in the scrub and circulate roles, preferably with open cases
- Registered Nurse (RN) must have twelve months of Operation Room clinical experience within the last thirty-six months. Experience must include all phases of a multi-service ambulatory surgical center or hospital operation room.
Education Required:
• Current and unrestricted license from any US State, District of Columbia or US Territory to provide healthcare within scope of practice.
• Graduate of an Associate, Diploma, or Baccalaureate degree from accredited school of nursing (National League of Nursing).
• CNOR certification is desired.
• Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
• American Heart Association - Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certification is preferred.
Physical Requirements:
• Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
• Work involves sitting and standing for prolonged periods of time.
• May require bending, stooping and lifting up to 15 lbs.
Other Special Qualifications:
• Must be able to read, write and speak English to effectively communicate
• This position is unaccompanied.
• US Citizen or Permanent Resident Card is required.
• US DOD CNACI clearance or the ability to obtain one is required.
• Must be able to relocate to the United States Army Kwajalein Atoll.
• A valid passport is required and must be in your possession prior to relocation. You must maintain a current passport during your stay on Kwajalein Atoll
